Swiss Machining
Swiss machining, also known as Swiss screw machining or Swiss turning, is a high-precision manufacturing process ideal for producing small, intricate parts with tight tolerances. Unlike traditional CNC turning, the workpiece in Swiss machining is held by a collet and supported by a guide bushing, which provides stability as the cutting tool performs the machining operations. This design allows for the simultaneous movement of both the tool and the material, enabling the production of extremely precise and slender components with minimal deflection.
Swiss machining is particularly well-suited for small diameter parts and is widely used in industries such as medical devices, electronics, aerospace, and watchmaking. The process offers superior accuracy, excellent surface finishes, and the ability to handle complex geometries in a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and alloys. It is highly efficient for both high-volume production and the manufacture of precision parts with challenging designs.
Wanda's Swiss Machining Capabilities
Our Swiss-type CNC lathes are ideal for quickly machining precision parts with complex shapes and profiles in a single setup. One of the primary advantages of Swiss-style machining is its capability to produce smaller, longer, and more intricate components. Unlike traditional machining methods where the tool accesses the open turning part, in Swiss machining, the part is supported and guided to the tool. This unique setup enables exceptional accuracy for longer, thinner components and even the most complicated small parts.
Swiss machining is particularly effective for manufacturing long, slender components. Typical part lengths range from approximately 150mm (6 inches) to 450mm (17.71 inches), although certain machines may accommodate longer pieces with appropriate support systems. Kintec's Swiss-style lathes are engineered to efficiently handle small-diameter parts, with a maximum diameter capability ranging from about 1mm (0.04 inches) to 38mm (1.49 inches).
How Does A Swiss-type Lathe Work?
A conventional turning machine has a fixed headstock that holds the spinning workpiece when a cutting tool moves across to machine the outer diameter. However, in a Swiss CNC turning center, it employs a sliding headstock that feeds bar stock through a guide bushing in the Z-axis towards the stationary cutting tool.
In the turning operation, clamped onto the chuck or collet in the headstock, the bar stock is located radially and precisely. The headstock moves back and forth along the z-axis, taking the bar stock with it. The turning tools, carried on the gang slide, always engage the bar stock close to the bushing, usually within 1 to 3 mm, thus providing the greatest degree of support and decreasing vibration and tool deflection consequently. And continuous feeding is achieved by the movement of the spindle and the supply of the guide bush.

CNC Turning
CNC turning is an ideal technique for creating deep bores, threaded elements, and a variety of cylindrical shapes with superior surface finishes. For precise component production, fast lead times, and flexible batch sizes, Wanda's CNC turning services provide the solution you need. Explore how we can support your manufacturing requirements.
CNC Milling
CNC milling is a precision machining process that involves using computer-controlled rotating cutting tools to remove material from a workpiece. This method is ideal for producing complex geometries, detailed surfaces, and intricate prismatic shapes. Multi-axis CNC milling machines offer versatility and accuracy, allowing for the creation of both flat and curved surfaces without the need for specialized tooling. This adaptability makes CNC milling suitable for a wide variety of industries and applications, ensuring efficient production of high-quality components.
EDM Services
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a highly precise manufacturing process used to shape hard metals and materials that are difficult to machine with conventional methods. It works by generating controlled electrical sparks between an electrode and the workpiece, which erodes the material to form the desired shape. EDM is particularly useful for creating intricate details, fine features, and tight tolerances in components that require high precision.
Surface Finishing
There are two main types of EDM: wire EDM, which uses a thin wire as the electrode to cut intricate shapes, and die-sinking EDM, where the electrode takes the shape of the cavity to be machined. EDM is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and mold-making, where complex geometries and hard materials are essential.
